A Flexible Half-Day at Daejeon's Hanbat Arboretum
Start in the greenhouse, step into a garden if the rain eases, and move to the Natural Heritage Center if it doesn't. Includes November hours, a gallery closure and stroller loans.

If rain is in the forecast for Daejeon, Hanbat Arboretum still works. Start in the Tropical Garden greenhouse. If the rain eases while you're inside, walk out into one of the gardens; if it doesn't, the Natural Heritage Center is about 200 meters away as the crow flies. Check one thing before you go: on Mondays, both the greenhouse and the center are closed.
Pick the day and the hours first
Each part of the arboretum closes on a different day. The East Garden and the greenhouse close on Mondays, the West Garden on Tuesdays, and when one of the arboretum's closing days falls on a public holiday, the arboretum opens as usual. Entry is free.1

The gardens switch to winter hours on November 1, so a late-afternoon walk in the West Garden needs an earlier start from then on.
By bus, lines 618, 606 and 911 stop at "Hanbat Arboretum" (한밭수목원). Lines 104, 301, 318, 604 and 918 stop at "Seo-gu Health Center" (서구보건소). From the subway, use Government Complex Station (정부청사역) exit 3 and walk 15 to 20 minutes toward Dunsan Police Station.2 In the rain, a short bus ride may be easier than that 15 to 20 minute walk. Drivers get the first three hours free in a 1,195-space lot.3
Let the weather choose the order
The order is the only thing you need to change. These timings leave room for slow walking and breaks.
A half-day order for each kind of weather
- Weather
- Steady rain
- Order
- Tropical Garden, then Natural Heritage Center
- Allow
- About 2.5 hours
- Weather
- Showers that stop
- Order
- Tropical Garden, East Garden pond, Natural Heritage Center
- Allow
- About 3.5 hours
- Weather
- Clearing skies
- Order
- East Garden, West Garden, Tropical Garden
- Allow
- 3 to 4 hours
| Weather | Order | Allow |
|---|---|---|
| Steady rain | Tropical Garden, then Natural Heritage Center | About 2.5 hours |
| Showers that stop | Tropical Garden, East Garden pond, Natural Heritage Center | About 3.5 hours |
| Clearing skies | East Garden, West Garden, Tropical Garden | 3 to 4 hours |
On a Tuesday the West Garden is closed, so leave it out of the clear-weather order. On a Monday the greenhouse and the center are both closed, and this plan doesn't work.
Start with the greenhouse
Tropical Garden
- 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Last entry 5:30 p.m.
- Closed Mondays
- Free
The Tropical Garden has six themed areas, including mangroves, palms and a rainforest zone, and the arboretum's own description leads with the mangroves.4 Rather than looping the whole house quickly, pick one leaf or one tangle of roots above the water and look at it for a while. Plan on 45 to 60 minutes, which leaves time to stop and take photos. Stay on the paths and leave the flowers and fruit alone.
If the rain eases, walk to the East Garden pond
East Garden
- Nov to Mar: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Closed Mondays
The East Garden is next door, with a pond, a pavilion and a playground. The playground has a swing that a child can ride while staying in a wheelchair or stroller.5 There are seven restrooms across the arboretum and a café on the second floor of the research and management building (연구관리동).6 The photo at the top shows the East Garden on October 24, 2020. The Korea Forest Service expected this year's foliage to peak nationwide around the end of October, with no separate date for Daejeon.7

For a quieter walk, the West Garden
West Garden
- Nov to Mar: last entry 6 p.m.
- Closed Tuesdays
A visitor's account from 2019 describes the West Garden as quieter and much shadier than the East, with benches in the shade of the bamboo in its Meditation Forest.8 That suits a slow walk under an umbrella. The same writer singles out the garden around sunset; from November the 6 p.m. last entry makes that tighter.

You don't need to do both gardens. Decide when you'll head back, stop wherever the path is pleasant, and return the way you came.
If it keeps raining, the Natural Heritage Center
Natural Heritage Center
- Nov to Feb: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Closed Mondays
- Free
The Natural Heritage Center covers Korea's natural monuments: plants, animals and geology. If a tree in the arboretum caught your eye, head to the plant displays; if rocks and fossils interest you more, try geology. Individual visitors don't need a reservation, and food isn't allowed in the exhibition building.9
From October 20 to November 16, the woolly mammoth area of the first-floor permanent gallery is closed while an African elephant skeleton is installed. Visitors in that part of the gallery turn back the way they came.10 If the mammoth is the reason for your visit, go after November 17.
With a stroller or wheelchair
The center's information desk lends strollers (for children under 36 months) and wheelchairs free of charge against an ID, for use inside the building.11 Sources disagree on whether the arboretum lends them, so call its main line, +82-42-270-8452, before you go. A step-free route between the gardens, or on to the center, isn't confirmed.
An hour in the greenhouse, half an hour in a garden and an hour at the center, plus walking and breaks, comes to three or four hours. Drop the garden if the rain picks up, and stay longer wherever you'd like to.
